Model Overview

The Sehol E40X is an all-electric compact B-segment SUV launched by JAC Group's Sehol marque (one of Volkswagen Group's joint-venture sub-brands in China). Officially launched on 16 May 2021, the model essentially serves as the fully electric counterpart to the petrol-powered Sehol X4. An additional variant was introduced in September 2021, followed by an annual facelift in 2022. As of 2026, the lineup on sale primarily comprises the 2022 model year in two variant trims: Business Edition and Official Edition, with official retail prices pegged at RM160,800 and RM170,800 respectively. Geared towards younger buyers, its key rivals in the electric SUV segment include the Emgrand GSe, Xpeng G3, and Aion Y.
Design Language
The Sehol E40X adopts what the carmaker calls the "3.0 Era JAC Passenger Vehicle Global Design" language, sporting an edgy mecha-inspired look. Up front, it features a closed-off grille connected by a sleek chrome bar linking the lighting assemblies on either side, complete with a split-headlamp setup—full-width LED daytime running lights (DRLs) sit up top, while the main high and low beam clusters are neatly integrated into L-shaped chrome housings below. In profile, a dual shoulder line treatment is featured, paired with blacked-out B- and C-pillars to create a floating-roof silhouette. The rear end is highlighted by a full-width LED tail lamp bar, flanked by downward-angled light extensions on both sides for greater visual presence. In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,410 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,660 mm in height, with a 2,620 mm wheelbase. 17-inch alloy wheels come standard across the range, wrapped in 215/50 R17 Michelin tyres.
Step inside, and the cabin is finished in a predominantly dark theme, elevated by piano black trims and subtle chrome accents. The dashboard adopts a horizontal T-shaped layout, paired with a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel. A 10.25-inch floating central infotainment touchscreen and a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster are standard fitment across the range, alongside a touch-sensitive climate control panel. Gear shifting is operated via a sleek rotary drive selector.
Powertrain and Performance
Powering the Sehol E40X is a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering a maximum output of 110 kW (around 150 PS) and a peak torque of 340 Nm. Drive is sent to the wheels through a single-speed reduction gear transmission. Performance figures include a 0–50 km/h acceleration time of 3.6 seconds, a 0–100 km/h sprint completed in 9.7 seconds, and an electronically capped top speed of 150 km/h.
In terms of range and battery options, two capacities are offered: 55 kWh and 66 kWh. The 55 kWh model is fitted with either a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery or a honeycomb battery pack, yielding an NEDC-rated range of 420 km; the 66 kWh variant uses a ternary lithium battery pack, delivering an NEDC-rated range of 502 km. Via DC fast charging, replenishing the battery from 30% to 80% takes around 45 minutes, while a standard AC charge (15% to 100%) takes approximately 9.5 hours. A quick 10-minute DC top-up adds up to 85 km of driving range.
Chassis and Handling
Underneath, the Sehol E40X rides on a suspension setup consisting of front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam. Steering is handled by an Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system. Braking duties are performed by front ventilated discs and rear solid discs. The vehicle has a minimum ground clearance of 145 mm and a minimum turning circle diameter of ≤11.2 m. Kerb weight is rated at 1,690 kg. Manufacturing strictly follows German VDA quality management standards, with overall ride and handling fine-tuned through extensive calibration by Volkswagen chassis engineers.
Cabin and Features
On the connectivity and infotainment front, the Sehol E40X comes standard with a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch floating central touchscreen. The operating system integrates Huawei’s ecosystem alongside iFlytek voice recognition, supporting intelligent voice commands, satellite navigation, and remote telematics controls. Connected car capabilities and an intelligent infotainment suite are standard across the board. Creature comforts include keyless entry with push-start ignition, cruise control, remote start, and automatic climate control as standard. Higher-grade variants add heated front seats. Boot capacity starts at a practical 520 litres, expandable to 1,050 litres with the rear seats folded down. The vehicle also comes equipped with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) power supply functionality.
Safety and Intelligent Driving
On the safety front, the Sehol E40X is built with a high-strength safety cage. Standard safety features across the range comprise dual front airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Traction Control System (TCS). High-spec models offer the option of front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. An Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and reverse parking sensors come standard across all variants. Upper-tier trims also benefit from a 360-degree surround-view camera. The battery pack adopts liquid-cooled honeycomb cell technology, offering superior safety margins against thermal runaway.
For driver assistance, the Sehol E40X is the brand's first model equipped with JAC's proprietary J-Pilot autonomous driving suite. The flagship trim gets the upgraded J-Pilot PLUS system, backed by 24 sensing hardware components (including 6 HD cameras, 5 millimetre-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and a high-definition map positioning unit), enabling Level 2+ advanced driver assistance (ADAS). This suite includes full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Traffic Jam Assist (TJA), intelligent speed limit assist, active lane centering and cornering assist, assisted lane change, and automated parking assist.
Market Performance and Evaluation
Following its commercial rollout, market uptake for the Sehol E40X fell well short of initial targets, with monthly sales figures languishing in low volumes for an extended period, barely crossing double digits. Automotive industry observers noted that its price range of RM130,000 to RM155,900 was relatively steep for a compact EV crossover, particularly when the same price bracket in the internal combustion engine (ICE) market offered dominant, well-established options like the Haval H6 and Changan CS75 PLUS. While its design, equipment levels, and range figures were respectable, it faced uphill competition against dedicated, ground-up EV platform offerings such as the Aion Y. In overseas markets, the model is rebadged and sold locally in Russia as the Moskvich 3. Overall, while the Sehol E40X demonstrated solid product value in the RM130,000 to RM170,000 pure electric compact SUV segment with standout features like the J-Pilot ADAS suite, Huawei-backed smart cabin, dual 10.25-inch displays, and a 420–502 km range, challenges surrounding brand cachet, pricing strategy, and aggressive segment competition ultimately hampered its sales momentum.
